Isaan in the northeast is the largest region in the country — roughly the size of Cambodia, with which it shares a border (alongside Laos). Often overlooked, it’s one of the most underrated parts of Thailand, making it a top choice for seasoned travellers seeking something more authentic. Isaan is known for Khmer heritage along the ‘Royal Route’, which includes Nakhon Ratchasima and Buriram; and its rich history, from prehistoric sites in Udon Thani to ancient relics in Khong Jiam. Vibrant culture shines through in colourful festivals like Phi Ta Khon in Dan Sai. The region is also home to 26 dramatic national parks including wildlife-rich Khao Yai and the surreal rock formations of Phu Phra Bat Historical Park.
