Bhuddists in Lao observe Lent, also called “Boun Khao Phansa.”

Young monks are ordained for short periods of time to make merit for their families while their families give robes, food and other necessities. At night, families walk around the local temple three times and pour water on the ground at each corner of the temple. Ngamae Thoram, a female earth goddess tells the spirits of their relatives to come and receive their offerings.
