Traditions & Beliefs | Asarnha Bucha Day

Orange Wax Candle

Today, Buddhists mark the beginning of Buddhist Lent.  In Laos, the festival is called “Boun Khao Phansa” and during the next three-months, monks spend most of their time in prayer, meditation and refraining from travel…spending nights only in their own temple.

Thailand also celebrates their version of Buddhist Lent, called “Asarnha Bucha.” What makes the holiday special in Thailand is its ornate orange wax carved candles that are lit and kept burning throughout the three-month Lent period. The Candle Festival in Ubon Ratchatani is the highlight of this unique tradition.
