Story Behind the Image | Sanghyang Jaran Dance

The Sanghyang Jaran dance in Bali, Indonesia is a sacred ritual dance specific to Balinese Hinduism.

Here a man dances on hot coals of burning coconut husks under the trance of a horse spirit while men chant and sing in harmony all around him. After the dance, a Brahmin priest comes and douses the man in holy water, bringing him out of his trance and back to the mortal realm.
