Xieng Khouang is a mountainous region abounding in caves, tiered waterfalls and rugged karst formations. Its spacious plateaus and green valleys are home to several ethnic minorities whose colourful dress and traditional way of life are largely untouched by the modern world.
Xieng Khouang’s most famous sight is the mysterious Plain of Jars. Just outside Phonsavanh, ancient stone jars are strewn across hundreds of kilometres of land. They date from the Iron Age but there is no understanding of why they were created or placed there.
