When you visit Shan State, Myanmar in September (or October), you may be privileged to witness the 18-day Phaung Daw Oo Pagoda Festival.
The pagoda houses five small golden Buddha images. The Buddha images have been covered with so many layers of gold leaf that it is impossible to see the original shape of the statues.
Each year residents of the region hold an important cultural festival, during which time four of those Buddha images are carried around Inle Lake on a replica of a royal barge. The fifth image always remains at the pagoda.
