Exploration of Myanmar Spirits

Mount Popa, an extinct temple-topped volcano is the most important place in the country to worship the legendary ‘nat’ spirits. This curiously-shaped sheer-sided hill rises up from the flat plain and is topped by golden stupas. We will walk to the top of this famous pilgrimage site via the winding staircase, watched by mischievous monkeys hoping to be fed.
We will have the unique opportunity to witness a ceremony to the spirits, known as Nat Pwe. We will watch mediums as they dance and embody the nat’s spirit in a trance. Music adds to the mystical atmosphere of the ceremony with many participants becoming entranced.
On the way back there’s time for more spirits – in the form of jaggery, a local fiery drink. At a small hut we will see how palm juice and oils from native plants are pressed to make jaggery and other items.
