Bespoke Family Experience in Hanoi
Tour Overview
A fun day for all the family discovering the sights of Hanoi, crafting paper masks and playing with water puppets.
The day starts with a visit to the Museum of Ethnology. The museum features tribal art and artefacts, along with reconstructions of traditional long houses and stilted houses just waiting for the children to explore.
Next hop onto an open-sided electric car for a fun one-hour tour around the city. Pass by the main sights including the railway station, Hoa Lo Prison and the Opera House. Stop on one of the narrow streets for the children to see the art of making lanterns, masks and traditional toys.
Take a short walk to a local restaurant where lunch is served along with dishes specially for the children.
Next visit the home of the last traditional mask-making artisan in Hanoi. Popular with children, these colourful handmade paper masks were worn to celebrate the night of the full moon particularly during the Mid-Autumn Festivals. Chat with the artisan and learn how he is trying to raise awareness about the preservation of this ancient art. Meanwhile the children can have fun trying their hand at crafting their own paper mask.
It’s then time for some refreshments! During the hot summer months indulge the kids with a trip to an ice cream parlour, while during the cooler months sample the local favorite “banh ran man”, a tasty doughnut-style snack made from sticky rice.
The last stop is at the home of another artisan who has devoted his life to the art of water puppetry. Enjoy a private water puppet performance in his converted living room and hear the interesting secrets behind the beautiful wooden figurines. The children will even have the rare chance to play with the puppets and make them dance.
