Kyaukse and Elephant Dance
Overview
Not long ago, excavations to a strange shaped hill in Kyaukse revealed something incredible. Under the hill, they uncovered an 11th century stupa and two-storey inner temple. Within the Tamok Shinpin Shwegugyi Pagoda, excavators uncovered beautiful masonry and ancient images including a unique triple-Buddha image. Today, we’ll visit this miraculous 21st century discovery!
Then, under a shady tree at the base of Shwe Thar Lyaung Mountain, we’ll get to see the traditional Kyaukse Elephant Dance. Men dressed in an elaborate life-sized elephant costume perform an ancient dance to the sound of drums.
In a local workshop, we’ll see how these huge elephant figures are made. We’ll also climb to the pagoda at the top of the hill to photograph the panoramic views over the town and taste some Burmese tea.
