Spend a spiritual evening making offerings and watching the glowing colours of the golden stupas of Myanmar’s most famous landmark.
Just before sunset arrive at the stunning Shwedagon Pagoda, the most sacred place in Myanmar with a history stretching back over 2,500 years. Its bell-shaped superstructure, resting on a terraced base, is covered in about 60 tonnes of gold-leaf causing it to glisten and glimmer in the light of the setting sun.
Every evening the residents of the city assemble at the pagoda to meditate and pay their respects to the Buddha. Enjoy the flickering lights and delicate aromas of candles and sticks of incense being lit as offerings, and observe the saffron-clad monks passing through the temple. Get your camera ready to take some footage of the glowing stupas set against the darkening sky.
Join in this very special and unique ceremony with an offering of oil lamps. Your guide will be accommodating you how to offer the oil lamps and at the same time you will be given knowledge according to Buddhist scriptures, lighting lamps as offerings among stupas, monasteries, Buddha statues and scrolls is greatly meritorious. It is believed that people who light lamps as offerings to the Buddha will get a dignified appearance, ample wealth, roots of goodness and great wisdom.
