Story Behind the Image | Ayutthaya Buddha

Nestled inside the city of Ayutthaya, the former capital of the old Thai kingdom of Siam, are numerous archeological sites which are a treat for any photographer.

At one of the main ruins there is also a “living temple.” In this temple devotees of Thai Buddhism apply paper thin leaflets of hammered and pressed gold onto sacred objects – such as this Buddha head – as an act of devotion and merit.  As a result, the exact look of the objects are always slightly changing.  The ambient light produces a beautiful effect as it reflects off the hundreds of gold leaflets which adorn this ancient stone Buddha carving.
